A Few Tips for Maintaining Glass Shower Doors

Blog

If you have always felt that it was easier to toss a shower curtain into the washer or replace it than it is to keep glass shower doors clean and looking good, you may be right. However, unless you are washing that curtain between every shower, and keeping it out of the bathroom unless needed so it does not get damp from moisture and humidity in the room, it is a great place for mold and mildew spores to breed and grow. It will also hold bacteria and other contaminants in the material, which spreads germs and diseases. So even if it takes a bit of extra cleaning work, glass shower doors are better for your family. Here are a few tips that will help you to maintain them.

Teach Everyone to Use a Squeegee

After each shower, use a squeegee to remove all the water from the glass. This will not only prevent unsightly streaks and drop spots but will help prevent mildew and mold from growing. You can teach everyone in the family to use the squeegee after they shower. Of course, you may have to go in and get the top of the doors for the smaller family members. That way, the shower will remain clean after every person.

Ventilate the Bathroom

If there is not already a ventilation fan in the bathroom, have one installed. Make sure that everyone turns the fan on when showering. When no one is using it, be sure to keep the shower door open to avoid a build-up of moisture and humidity that will steam up the glass and also encourage the growth of mold and mildew. You can also open a window after showering or use a small dehumidifier.

Use a Water-Beading Spray

There are a number of products you can spray on the glass doors that will keep the water from staying on them. This product will coat the glass on shower enclosures so the water slides off without leaving a mark. You may want to look for this type of product in the auto supply section of the store as they are marketed to keep windshields free of streaks and droplets.

The water that splashes against glass shower doors has soap in it. As the water evaporates from the glass it leaves behind a soapy residue that attracts dirt and dust. To make keeping your shower doors clean and looking good you need to keep the water from them as much as possible. The above tips are a good way to do this.

Cleaning Glass More Effectively

After moving into a house with loads of windows, I knew that I would be spending a lot of time dealing with the problem. I wanted to make things right, so I started thinking about how to clean glass more effectively. I started focusing on keeping water from spraying on the windows, and then I worked on making sure that the glass stayed polished all of the time. I even hired a few of my kids to shine the windows periodically, which I felt really helped. This website is your new resource for all things glass, including how to keep them clean.
